Our latest Interior Insights instalment features a full home renovation and thoughtful expansion of a 1920s Colonial home in Wilmette, Illinois, by Lindsey Goddard Interiors.

As a full-service design studio specialising in luxury interiors that tell the story of their owners, Lindsey and her team wanted to preserve the soul of the original architecture, whilst giving the client and their family a layout and level of functionality that would support the demanding and ever-changing requirements of modern living.

Speaking on her approach to achieving this, Lindsey comments: “We began by identifying the needs of the family, which guided how each space should live and flow. From there, we studied the existing parameters and interior architectural details in every room to determine what would be both appropriate and interesting. Once that foundation was set, we layered in unique pieces, custom details, and subtle shifts in texture and tone. This allowed each room to express its own personality while still harmonising with the home as a whole.”

The result is a property that exudes a classic contemporary aesthetic, which honours the home’s heritage whilst simultaneously allowing each room to feel quietly elevated.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in the mudroom, where contemporary forms, refined lines and a soft, modern palette have been combined with original interior features that gave the home its foundational character. Lindsey shares: “The result was a design that captured a sense of timelessness, one that feels rooted in tradition yet confidently forward-looking.”

The contrasting lower and top cabinetry is accented by traditional T-bars in a dark bronze finish, which creates a subtle yet impactful focal point. When choosing cabinet hardware, Lindsey advises: “Hardware is too often selected as an afterthought, yet it plays a vital role in how a space feels and functions. When chosen with intention, proportion, and artistry, it becomes an integral part of the design story. The right hardware has the power to quietly elevate an entire room or particular furnishing, creating that subtle sense of perfection you can’t quite put your finger on.”

Calm yet intentional, the powder room effortlessly blends the organic stone and wood of the vanity with soft, woven textures through carefully curated wallcoverings and light shades. The vanity’s unlacquered brass cabinet hardware complements the patinated tap to further add warmth and character to the space.

With a palette of blush pinks and soft taupes, the daughter’s bedroom layers sumptuous textures with playful touches to create a child’s bedroom that is personal yet effortlessly refined – a balance that has become Lindsey’s signature style.

Designed with longevity in mind, the space was designed to be timeless now and for years to come. This has been achieved through the addition of timeless joinery, adorned with sophisticated yet soft cabinet ring pulls.

Sweet in spirit and enduring in style, the daughter’s bedroom leads to a shared en-suite that features playful arches, tonal florals and tailored trims to create an en-suite bathroom that is functional yet beautiful.

The soft elegance of the homeowner’s primary bathroom is a curated collection of beautiful moments. Lindsey notes: “After making our selections, we stepped back to ensure the full composition felt connected, and were thrilled by how the interplay of finishes and shapes created a cohesive, elevated and, at times, playful thread throughout the home.”
