Located within a historic period property in Minneapolis, we are delighted to show you around the kitchen of the breathtaking Pillsbury Castle.
An impressive architectural marvel dating back to 1903, the mansion reflects the English Tudor Gothic style and is built from local rock-faced Platteville limestone.
The inspiration
The renovation of the kitchen, designed by Kate Roos Design in collaboration with Partners 4 Design, was led by an authentic approach to preserve the original features and celebrate the history of the property, whilst balancing the beauty of modern decadence, with a trio of our solid brass hardware collections sourced from Knobbery Minneapolis.

Designer Kate Roo shares, “The design concept for the kitchen and scullery was born out of the necessity for this historic home to function well for modern family living. From morning coffee and mid-week dinners to hosting guests at the weekend, the space needed adequate storage, ample counter space, cutting-edge appliances, and a layout to support the intended use.”
The aesthetic
The perimeter of limestone walls influenced many of the design decisions with Kate wanting to ensure the character of the natural stone was highlighted from various angles and was also complemented by the choice of new materials.
Presenting a heritage two-tone look, classic duck egg is paired with rich oak. Offset by the lightness of limestone walls and marble counters, the positioning and choice of colours give the space a majestic yet homely aesthetic.
The details
Brimming with beautiful design details, the kitchen interior includes a fumed brass hood, marble counters and backsplash, stained wood and hand-gilded mirrors to create a harmonious balance of old and new.
“The materials and finishes were inspired both by the homeowner's tastes, and the existing architecture of the home. The deep, calming cabinetry colour is similar to a colour found in the homeowner's previous residence and visually softens the castle-like limestone walls. Stained wood and cinnamon-red accents add warmth and richness to the palette. Infusing the room with texture and patina wherever possible adds depth and elevates the design,” notes Kate.
Get the look
Throughout the kitchen, a trio of our solid brass hardware collections dress the cabinetry. Mixing finishes, aged brass and satin antique satin lacquered, complement the cabinetry colour and unite the golden tones in the limestone walls.
Kate adds, “The cabinetry hardware was an important design element to the homeowners. They loved the idea of substantial hardware with warm metal finishes and a slightly masculine feel. The Dougan collection has that look and also adds a bit of subtle detail. In the scullery, we opted for the Carlton collection which relates
